Using a comprehensive sample of firm coverage initiation on social media platform Seeking Alpha (SA) and innovation activities from 2008 to 2018, we find that SA coverage initiation promotes multiple dimensions of corporate innovation such as quantity, quality, novelty and efficiency. We further find that firms with higher information asymmetry and those facing intense product market competition experience a greater increase in innovation outcomes following SA coverage initiation. Our findings suggest that third-party generated information on specialized social media mitigates the information asymmetry between firms and investors on corporate innovation activities and promotes corporate innovation.
